Controller Job Description
Court interpreters help individuals who aren’t fully proficient in English or who are hearing impaired by translating what is said to the target language or sign language. Another aspect of the court interpreter job description is to ensure everything the non-native speaker says is translated into English so that everyone in the courtroom has the same information.
Typical duties of a Controller
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Must be fluent in both English and at least one other language, such as Spanish or American Sign Language
• Must also have an understanding of the technical and legal terms used by judges and attorneys so that they can interpret their words accurately
• To have a bachelor’s degree.
• Need the strong vocabulary skills that usually come with education.
• Need to attend an orientation class, pass written and oral examinations, and undergo a criminal records check before you can be accepted as a court interpreter. The National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT), Consortium for Language Access
• In the Courts and Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf all offer certifications in legal interpreting. Federal courts have their own rigorous certification process for Spanish-English interpreters.
