Controller Job Description
Advertising coordinators are the glue that holds together an agency’s marketing efforts. They work with clients to develop and execute advertising campaigns, manage vendors and suppliers, and coordinate production schedules. Advertising coordinators may also be responsible for managing relationships with other internal departments or agencies. This might include working with PR teams to help craft messaging or coordinating with designers to ensure that materials are ready in time for press deadlines.
Advertising managers must be able to communicate effectively with their team, management and other staff members. Additionally, this role requires being able to communicate persuasively with the buyers in their target market. Advertising managers must be able to research and analyze industry trends to determine the most practical advertising strategies for their products or services. Advertising managers are required to continuously generate innovative ideas for engaging promotional campaigns. Being decisive and practical is important to advertising managers, as they often must choose between competing advertising strategies put forward by members of their team. Managing their time and budget while directing and overseeing their team with maximum efficiency requires advertising managers to use their organizational skills effectively. Advertising managers must be proficient in using software for tasks like desktop publishing, data visualization, website development and video editing.
A bachelor’s degree in advertising, journalism, marketing or a related discipline is required for most advertising management positions. Expected courses may include marketing, consumer behavior, business, market research, sales, communication, technology, visual and digital arts and photography. Professional certifications can validate a professional’s qualifications to current and future employers. Advertising managers can earn certifications to gain more practical knowledge of their daily responsibilities, test their professional skills and further advance their careers.
Typical duties of a Controller
• Creating marketing campaigns based on client needs, objectives, and target markets
• Reviewing ad copy for grammatical errors and making recommendations for improvement
• Ensuring that all advertising materials are consistent with brand standards and that materials are produced in a timely manner
• Researching market conditions to determine which products will be in demand in the future
• Preparing budgets and creating budgets for advertising campaigns
• Coordinating advertising campaigns with other departments within an organization such as human resources or public relations
• Determining pricing for advertisements based on size of audience reached and frequency of exposure
• Reviewing the performance of previous advertisements to determine what worked well and what did not work well
