Controller Job Description
Controllers and assistant controllers prepare financial statements and reports that summarize and forecast a business’s activity and financial position. They may also develop internal policies and procedures for an organization’s budget administration, cash and credit management, and accounting functions.
A controller needs to possess the same skills a good accountant has: strong numerical proficiency, organization, good problem-solving skills and excellent use of logic. Furthermore, since a large part of the job is delegating tasks to subordinates and then aggregating their work to make final decisions, a controller must have excellent leadership skills and a big-picture method to approaching tasks.The role usually requires at least seven years of relevant experience and a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance. Many organizations prefer candidates who have a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) or professional accreditation such as certified public accountant (CPA), certified management accountant (CMA) or chartered global management accountant (CGMA). Previous experience in public accounting is highly valued.

As a managing director has many responsibilities, they need to be able to organise themselves well. They may also be responsible for organising the workload of other members of the management team and other members of staff. Managing directors are usually directly involved in the company’s finances, including overseeing annual budgets and reports. This means that they need to be highly financially literate and understand how to manage finances on a corporate scale.Managing directors need to have a good knowledge of business and commerce generally so that they can ensure the continued success and growth of the company.

Typical duties of a Controller
Managing Directors determine, formulate and review the general policy programs and the overall direction of organisations within the framework established by boards of directors and similar governing bodies.
• Allocate financial resources and authorise human resource requirements to effectively implement policies and programs.
• Compile and present reports, budgets and projection plans to organisations governing boards and stakeholders.
• Determine senior staff and review programs, reports and recommendations made by management team.
• Officially represent the organisation in negotiations, public hearings, conferences, etc.
• Oversee monitoring and evaluation of organisation enactment with objectives.
• Research relevant legislation and regulations pertaining to organisations activities and ensure practices are within legal limits.
• Set forth objectives, policies and strategies and direct overall operations of organisations.
